The Author

I always thought that blue eyes were the rarest colour, which was why people went so crazy over them… but it turns out that across the globe, green eyes are much rarer (although it depends on where you live: in Ireland and Scotland fully 80% of people have either blue or green eyes).

So why don’t green eyes get the love that blue eyes do? Green eyes can be just as striking and beautiful, and have the added bonus of not being the result of a weird genetic mutation thought to have occurred between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago, as blue eyes are. The mutation resulted in a “switch” that turned off the genetic mechanism for brown eyes.

If you have blue eyes and meet someone else who does, you are said to share something else between you: one ancient, common ancestor. So, you’re basically distant cousins, and any procreation between you is just shitting in the collective gene pool. Gross!

Meanwhile, people are not born with green eyes, but grow into them. All babies are born with either blue or brown eyes (so common!), but can develop green eyes by about 6 months old. Green eyed people are more discerning and patient, revealing their true colour over time. We’re mysterious and enchanting… get to know us!
